A B-1 is good for as long as the business purpose lasts, up to a maximum of
one year. Usually, you will be admitted for six months. But it could also
be less if your business affairs require less time and there are other
reasons (usually, you'll get six months even for a two-week conference).

The longer the claimed business purpose is, the more likely the immigration
officer will be suspicious.

In response to the comment about the legality of working/not working in the US, it's true my books end up on the US market, but they have to be licenced from the British publishers, who are the only people I have contractual links with. I don't know if this affects anything?
