What is an I-766, and what is it required for? How to obtain one?
Hi.
I have an H-1B and am working for a firm.
Recently I accepted a position at another firm. The H-1B process has been started but I am told I need to give them a copy of my I-766 and that the current work authorization card I have is not up-to-date.
Right now I do not have the I-766. The only document I have is the Form I-797A valid through 2006, which is more like a piece of paper than a card. And have a h-1 visa stamp.
Please can someone explain what an I-766 is, and how to obtain it.
Thanks.

They don't appear to know what they're talking about. If you're a
"normal" H-1B you shouldn't have an I-766.

It's an Employment Authorization Document which you might get if
you were part way through the Green Card progress, for example.

I searched on the web too and the documentation for H-1B is the I-797.
The I-766 is for any optional practical training. Then it came to me, I looked through my stuff and found my I-766 that I got all the way way back when I did my OPT.
What good would that do them??
Because I did get my H-1B while I was in my F-1 OPT status.
