Re length of Visa process I think it all depends on the type of Visa. A friend of mine went to the States on a "I-visa" whose issuance didn't take longer than 2 days. However I guess it helped that he had a letter from a federal company in Washington D.C. before he actually had an interview at the US embassy in London..

The requirement is One year in the last three outside of the US..... Not in the UK for one year.

How did I end up in America? I was here doing a presentation on education technology for Adobe.
After my presentation a quiet, cute teacher came up and asked what I was doing Friday and that she loved my accent.
The rest is history
(10th anniversary this year and it's been wonderful. Wife would move to Scotland tomorrow if she could but we're planning in about two/three years. Probably move to Trossachs or Perthshire area.)
