Validity of H1

I had worked in US on a valid H1 from Mar 97 to Feb 2000. I had also started to process my
Green card. In March 2000, I had to return back to home country due to personal reasons.
While at home, my stay prolonged and the need to stay at home arose, so I sent a
resigination that was accepted.

The H1 visa expires in May 2001. Now I feel the need and urge to go back to US once again.
I do have to identify a employer first. DO I have to process my H1 papers once again?
Since I already had a H1, will my proccessing time now decrease??

If I go back to US after a year, do I get to stay on a H1 for 6 years again?

Thoughts to clear my mind are appreciated.

Thank you.
