Default US to require healthcare coverage for visas from Nov

New policy from Nov 3 proclaimed by Trump: most immigrant and non-immigrant visa holders will have to show that they will have sufficient healthcare coverage within 30 days of arrival or sufficient means to pay for expected healthcare costs. Obamacare plans will not suffice.

This is actually nothing new, somebody who posted on here was refused due to being unable to satisfy the Public Charge rule, just more formalised and how often have we stressed this issue on this very forum.

I have seen no mention of not being able to buy cover through the exchange.

The proclamation does not state that this is a requirement for non-immigrant visas.

Reading about the number of Brits who end up having major medical treatment in the USA whilst on vacation (and let's not start with the pregnant ladies who give birth), none of whom have medical insurance, I think those visiting the US should have to have travel/medical insurance.

I can't say I have any real problem with this proposed rule. New immigrants don't understand health insurance, this is a good way to educate them as much as anything else.

Any idea on the mechanics of it? How would someone on an H1-B/L-1/E-2 demonstrate healthcare coverage when conventional travel insurance wouldn't cover them at all under those visas given their typical intent is to live here for a period of time rather than visit?

Ask HR for details of the cover. However none of those are immigrant visa's.

Aren't you supposed to have it within 30 days of arrival?

That should be enough time to sign up for whatever company-sponsored insurance is being offered, and you should be able to show the embassy your offer letter from the company detailing that insurance will be offered.

Seems perfectly fair to me, someone has to pay for that medical treatment they may unfortunately have to receive if they have an accident or get ill upon arrival.

Unlike the UK where it's a 'let everyone in and let them rinse up the NHS' scenario, this seems reasonable.

That's not what happens:

https://www.gov.uk/healthcare-immigr...n/how-much-pay

Unlike with British Citizens, we get the National Insurance AND the IHS from visa nationals in the UK.

Another group of bleeding heart US Citizens logged a lawsuit against the enforcement of a regulation/rule already on the books for a few years.
