Default US ESTA visa

I've been living in the UK for 9 years now. I used to have an Indonesian passport and tried to apply for US tourist visa 7 years ago and has been rejected.

I'm British now and have a UK passport. I would like to apply for the ESTA visa. My questions are:

will the previous visa rejection affect my current application?

what do I anwser when asked
Have you ever been denied a U.S. visa or entry into the U.S. or had a U.S. visa canceled? *

I'll be entering my UK passport details and based on that I've never been denied visa/entry etc.

I'll be travelling with my 2 year old son and don't want to have any problems.

Thanks.

If will "affect" your current application in the sense that you will have to declare the fact that you have, in the past, been denied a US visa. Whether or not your application will be approved is a question that nobody here can answer - the only way for you to find that out is to apply

what do I anwser when asked

Since it appears that you have been denied a US visa, the answer to this question is "yes".

I'll be entering my UK passport details and based on that I've never been denied visa/entry etc.
The question doesn't ask whether you have been denied a US visa since you acquired your current citizenship - it asks whether you have ever been denied a US visa - and, according to what you have said, you have been denied a US visa.

I'll be travelling with my 2 year old son and don't want to have any problems.
Tell the truth on the ESTA application and don't make any travel plans until you have an approved ESTA.

You may find crg's post from this thread rather useful:

Of course if you ask the same person for some potentially derogatory bit of information such as ever being arrested he would mull it over and say no because it was soooooo long ago.

People do the same thing with visa denials etc when they switch from some other nationality to being British. Have you ever been denied a visa? Hmmmmm..... not since I became British two weeks ago I haven't..... that must be what they mean....... I'll just insert extra words into the question using my imagination so I can say NO to that one..... yeh..... that's the ticket......

What a bunch of rubbish.

You need to be totally honest, or you risk any future entry to the US.

Thanks for the replies.

Another question,

if I've been denied ESTA I can still apply for visa. Is it worth to apply for one (visa) ?

The reason I was denied previously is because I was not a permanent UK resident.

Yes.

That depends on how much you want to go to the US. What's your risk tolerance for success/failure?

Well, if the ESTA application is denied and the OP doesn't apply for a visa then "failure" is guaranteed ...

So you see, even declaring a previous visa denial doesn't necessarily mean you won't get an ESTA approval. You did declare the prior denial, right?

Good luck to you!
