Default US Civil War

If any Yanks here or Brits married to Yanks are interested in checking out any family involvement in the Civil War, this site is giving free access until the end of April. My DH has always been interested in the Civil War and this gives some history as well.

no need to even register.

Very interesting my family have believed and been told over the years that a relation was a solider present at the time when Lee surrended to Grant at Appomattox court House in 1865.

Going to have a read

Always been very interested in the civil war spent alot of time walking around the grave yards in Middleburg and Manassas, and went to see Stonewall Jacksons monument, sends chills down your spine.

Thank you

My mom did our family tree several years ago and determined that on her side we have a Confederate General from the state of Mississippi. Apparently his picture hung in the State Capitol for some time. I have forgotten the name however. My mom's family is from the state of MS.

That wasn't a civil war.
Now we had a proper civil war, complete with a ripping snort of a public beheading at the end.

If you are going to have a civil war, chuck the whole thing in the trash and start again. Thats how it should be done.

While working on my Mom's family tree I found out my gr gr grandfather enlisted 10 days before my gr grandmother was born. His unit went off to Louisiana to fight and supposedly he was a prisoner at Andersonville-NOT a nice place- repatriated to the Union hospital in Alexandria, VA where he died. He never saw my gr grandmother.

Anyway, the young man who brought his body back to my gr gr grandmother for burial, stayed to help her with the farm-she had 9 kids!! They got married and had 6 kids.

Thanks Cindy. That's a great site. I forwarded it to my nephew who is a Civil War buff and my southern son-in-law.

None of my ancesters are listed but that would probably be because they didn't arrive in the US until 10 yrs after the war.

God bless her. Those women had strength didn't they. My grandmother died at age 91 and had 13 children but only one husband and had children while she was in her forties. Lets hope you and I carry their genes for longevity.

Our relatives (or some of them anyway) were here, but I can't remember what family name would be right. Will have to see what my Dad finds.

Its probably too overused but Lincoln's letter to Mrs. Bixby is something else.

Dear Madam: I have been shown in the files of the War Department a statement of the Adjutant-General of Massachusetts that you are the mother of five sons who have died gloriously on the field of battle. I feel how weak and fruitless must be any words of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering to you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save. I pray that our heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.

I start to think of this comparison Civil War vs Iraq War letters.
