US Citizenship? Notification to Whom?
 

After you become a naturalized citizen of the US, who in the government has to be notified of this change of status, i.e. social security administration, IRS?

Anyone know?

At minimum, you need to notify the SSA, especially if Jim's SS card has the "Valid for work only with INS authorization" or some such on it. The IRS doesn't care whether he is a citizen or not, since he has been paying taxes as a Permanent Resident anyway, and the rates are not any different. Also a good idea to update his status with his employer, who I am sure he needed to provide with a copy of his EAD, and later his Green Card, for his HR file.

And of COURSE, you need to e-mail ANYONE and EVERYONE that you can possibly think of (and even those you can't), just to spread the GREAT NEWS!

As a general rule, no one that I know of.

In Jim's case, he should tell the NG -- it is relevant for his security clearance.

Thanks Bruce ... hadn't thought of Ms. Lowey. Her liaison was a tremendous help in the days after September 11, 2001 getting the extended I-551 stamp for Jim.

Jim really likes her brand of politics and has been following her career for a few years now Unfortunately, they redrew the district lines and she is no longer our Rep ;-( but still fights the good fight for us.

Will contact her office after the 12th and let them know.

I remember a few years back when Starwind had naturalized she posted:

"Go to your SSA office ater your Naturalization and show them your Natz
Certificate so that the SSA computer system knows you are a citizen so that
when other government agencies try to confirm your citizenship status with
the SSA they can actually confirm it instead of saying you aren't one, thus
resulting in your having to go through additional time and trouble in order
to prove it to a whole bunch of different people/agencies"

So, that's the only one I know of!

I, too, remembered this but not who said it and if it were really necessary. Will do that if only because it would simplify things in the estate department if I were to die first.

Hi Rete,

Definitely SSA. When I changed my SSA card to remove the "not valid to work without INS authorization", the SSA woman told me to notify them if I became a citizen. I would keep the same card but they still needed to know.

Not really. Most employers don't get to hire you based on whether you
have a green card or are a citizen. If he just got naturalized, then the
odds are that he has been a PR for at least 3 years. Proof of right to
work can just be the SS card and Driver's License, assuming as a green
card holder, he already has one that doesn't have the INS/CIS
restriction listed. There is no change it the kind of SS card a citizen
gets over a green card holder.

Don't forget to take Jim to the registar's office and get him registered to vote! Or, do they do that just after the swearing in?
