UK Police certificate?
 

Hi, I went to the police station to attempt to apply for a police certificate but the person there didn't really seem to know what they were doing and it took them, and 3 others, about 40 minutes to figure out how to download the form and send me on my way with it. My question is that the form requires 2 forms of ID and as I've recently moved house I don't have utility bills so birth certicate and passport are my only options, but do I have to send them off to the place? I read on the form that taking it to the local police station would slow the process down by 5 days but if I did that would it be a case of them signing the sheet there and then to say I am who I am or would I still need to mail my passport off? I'm just not too keen on the idea of sending my passport somewhere considering I've just ticked a sheet saying I've never lost one as it would be typical if it vanished into thin air on the way.

Hi Drummer,
The police should photocopy your method of id and return them to you while you are there. The id needs 2 forms Etc with your name and address on. As far as I know there is no way to get the reports any faster and it will take about 30 to 40 days, mine took about 28 days on each occasion ( they are good for 12mths) due to my delays in the visa process.

When I applied, I went into my local police station and told them that I
needed a police certificate for Immigration purposes. Thankfully the
policeman I dealt with knew pretty much what I was talking about. I showed
him my ID and paid my money, he gave me a receipt and told me that it could
take up to 30 days.

I didn't have to send anything away at all. In fact, the policeman filled
in the form for me too. You might want to go to another police station and
see if they know any better than the first station. Failing that, fill in
your form and take it back to the local police station and they should take
your money off you there.

My application experience was identical to Donna's above.

I applied in mid-November. It took exactly 40 days.

I don't know of any way to make it go faster.

Oh I'm not too worried about it taking the 30-40 days just so long as I don't have to run the risk of the post losing my passport I'm happy. Thanks for the replies, I'll fill the form out and go back to the station, I'll just hope I get someone there who knows what to do with the forms once I hand them over.

I live in an area where our local police won't deal with signing forms
of I.D. So I had to send my passport and a Utility bill to the local
police headquarters. To ease my mind a little I opted for Royal mail
Special delivery, it promises next day delivery and must be signed for
I also enclosed a special delivery envelope for the return, it cost
about �5 for each envelope but it was insured and the passport was
only away from me for about 48 hours.

As you don't have a utility bill, have you maybe got a rental lease or
some such other document that is suitable, as it is for the proof of
your address. Your local council may also be helpful in producing your
council tax bill in quick time if you pop into their office.

Failing that also you can go to any solicitors office and for a fee of
about �5, swear an oath in their presence and that too can be used.
