Even going on a working holiday I presume you still have to return to Uk once its over? I dont understand I dont mind the 5-10 years wait as I can make trips back and forth there in between its just that people are saying 5-10 years wait how if i dont have the skills for a job there can I just apply for a greencard anyway and wait 10 years?

The USA does not have a working holiday visa.

The 5 - 10 year plan includes things like getting a degree, or working in the UK for a company with offices in the USA then trying to transfer, or working and saving enough for an investment visa, or opening your own biz in the UK which could expand to the USA. Not something like file some paperwork then wait 10 years for a visa to fall into your lap. LOL

No its a 5-10 year plan to do something like
1) Get yourself employed by a company with offices in the UK and US
2) Make yourself so invaluable to the company that they won't want to loose you
3) Request a transfer the US branch of the company and persuade your boss to go with it.

I think the US branch of his Dad's business is his best shot.

Just to clarify, it's called the Visa Waiver Program = the requirement to have a visa is waived = there is no visa! :)

Slogging through a degree etc is a bit of a long shot.

See if dad can transfer him, have some fun and then get out

I would imagine that would be really hard to establish here from scratch because of all the competition already here with knowledge of the local markets.

(I came over here working for Adobe and I started my current business a few years ago. I'd go back tomorrow if I could. I personally find UK/Europe to be far more attractive than the U.S. However because my business is quite successful I can't just leave it. It'll be a few years yet sadly. Still as a dual citizen there's a lot of choice where to live.)

I think its more a statement of what a hell hole most of LA is than a comment on Didsbury. I've spent enough time stuck on the 405 just trying to get away from the airport to dislike the place with a passion.

Pretty much anywhere else in California and I can more than see the appeal (And in fact I'm pretty much 50:50 split on a possible move to San Francisco which is why I'm looking around on this site...)

But where did you get this idea? You don't know the area.

The trouble is, that as you may have gather from all the comments above, that at the moment, based on your own experience/skills, you have absolutely no route to a visa. So flying back and forth and giving it time is pointless, as it will make no difference.

If you want to make a difference, then you need to either get yourself some specialist skills and seniority so that you qualify for an employment based visa (and make it worthwhile a company petitioning for you at a cost of thousands to them), possibly even with a Masters degree if you can, or you need to figure out a business related route i.e. via your Dad's business (depending on what it is etc).

So 3 months in LA is a great idea, but it won't qualify you for a visa, tbh you might be better off staying in the UK and working your way up or planning a new business venture with your Dad.

Best of luck to you. :fingerscrossed:

I've no idea about Oz, but certainly Canada there are various options for staying after a WHV - plenty on the Canada forums have done just that. It would at least give you up to two years of an open work permit so that you don't need sponsorship and could try out life in North America. Although it's not quite as sunny all year round as LA, but it does get properly hot summers at least! :)
