I know Canada waives visa requirement for short term travel for U.S. permanent
residents. Has anyone ever visit Canada from U.S with the temporary stamp on the
passport (before receiving the actual card)?

I know someone who did that. You should be okay. You might want to carry the I-485
approval notice as well. That was what my friend did.
