Re: transit visa
If you are travelling on a non-confirmed ticket like a buddy/family ticket you need
to have a transit visa. If not then transit visa is not necessary as you will not be
getting out of the airport.

Contact the airline. There is something called Transit Without Visa (TWOV), but it is
not available to citizens of all countries, and only available for certain airlines
and airports.
It could be even more difficult because some flights from Canada to the US are
cleared through immigration in Canada rather than in LA, and then arrive as
essentially domestic flights (this would make TWOV more difficult or impossible). If
you need to change airlines, you also may need to get out of the terminal building
and go to a different building - again, you can't do that easily with TWOV.
Overall, the US generally is not set up as a hub for international travel, this kind
of thing is always a pain!
