Default Totally O/T: Hard to find item........

Hello, all!

Ever since I got here, I've searched high and low, but can't find them anywhere!!

I've been smoking hand-rolled cigarettes for years, and because I don't like the tobacco going in my gob, I used to buy little Swan/Rizla filters for them. When I got here, I was overjoyed to find the tobacco soooooooo cheap, but I can't find filters anywhere!!!! Waaahhhh!!! My lovely mum came over for a week last month, and brought loads over for me, but alas, I'm running low again, and I'd really like to find somewhere in Fort Lauderdale to get them from. Can anyone advise of anywhere to get them, or do Americans never use them, and I'm wasting my time by looking? (Raised a few eyebrows asking for them, I can tell you!!! And as soon as they see my hand-rolling machine, they're 5 seconds away from calling the cops!!!!! )
Any advice or recommendations (or if you want to send me some filters!!!! LOL! ) would be appreciated.

My friends in Massachusetts roll their own cigarettes, too. They also use filtered papers as does my future daughter-in-law in Nova Scotia, Canada. Each of them buy their supplies at the tobacco store where they buy their tobacco. As for cheap, try the prices in NYC. $7.56 for a pack of butts.

When I was a poor college student, we used to buy a machine called the Laredo. It came complete with filters. Would this be something that WalMart carries maybe? Even a grocery store? Bound to be cheaper than a specialty shop.

Kate, look for a specialty tobacco store (think 'cigar') & you should find them. Where are you buying your rolling 'baccy? Should find them there. Even the big supermarkets (WalMart/SuperK esp) have a little section for pipe/rolling where you should find them. Have you found your Rizla papers yet?
The worst news is that Golden Virginia (the real UK kind) is not imported into the States, period.

Thanks for the replies, everyone. I'll look in a few of the specialist smoke shops first, if not, I'll shop online. I buy my baccy from Walgreens, and it always has a packet of papers with it, so that's easy, but they don't sell the tips.
Thanks again, everyone!!!

Ah, your posting is making me jones for a smoke :-). I started smoking in my early 20's, and would smoke for a year or two, then take a year or two off. I’ve been an on again, off again smoker since that time (more off than on). Went through a cigar stage too, and loved Auturo Fuente #4's.

When I moved to SF to go to law school, I started rolling my own, using Drum tobacco. Then one day I opened a new package of Drum, and I found the corners of three leather square patches that you find on the back of Levi's (that list the size of the trousers) that had been fed into the tobacco shredder (they had not made it all the way through the shredder and were only half shredded). There was absolutely no doubt as to where these leather patches came from, and I could still read the size of the Levi's that the patches used to be attached to. Half the patch was intact with the other half shredded and hanging onto the intact half (they sometimes use leather as filler in tobacco, and quite often certain types of cigars are described as having a leathery quality in the smoke). I wrote a letter to the company that produces Drum and stapled the leather patches to the letter. They sent me a reply apologizing for any inconvenience along with three packages of Drum tobacco.

After a brief "off again" stint, I moved down to Pasadena, and started smoking again, this time using Bali Shag to roll my own (very good stuff).

But I decided it was time to quit, and I've been a happy non-smoker for around a year and a half now. I do miss the smoke and the rolling, but I'm also very happy for the other things that come with being a non-smoker (no coughing, clothes don't smell like smoke, etc.).

M.U.

Kate.. Advice?.. Give up smoking :-)
I used to smoke 20 a day before going on to a pipe and inhaling.. Went "cold turkey" in 1994 , wore one patch overnight and the folloing monday drove all the way from Bromsgrove to Paisley without stopping with a large bag of carrotts and 6 packets of Gum..
Got home with the trots and saw jaws but it worked :-)

Anyway.. for those looking for a taste of home.. have been finding stuff thats close or the same as UK products..

HP Brown Sauce is more or less A1 Steak Sauce (try it at Ryans next time you get chance.)

HP Fruity Sauce is Heinz 57 also at Ryans.

Salad Creme is close to JFG Salad Dressing or Walmarts Value range Salad Dressing.

Walmarts Great Value Pork and Beans is as close to British baked beans as you are going to get :-( All the others are too porky or too sugary or just the wrong beans for me.

Vanilla Pudding warmed is as close to Custard as you can get :-)

Sorry to say, there is NO equivalent to Cadbury's Chocolate.
Also I have asked Britvic UK if they distribute any of the Tango products over here.. Nope and no plans.
Likewise with Marmite.. (Carla (USC) has cravings for it.

No sign here of Cheese and Onion crisps , but there is Cheese and Onion Pringles.

Still looking for a good tea thats not Iced :-)

Re Marmite....

Do you have any Asian grocery stores near you? There's one in Dallas that has a whole Bitish aisle - much better than the Brit aisle you find in places like Krogers. Came as quite a shock when I went there for naan bread and parathas etc. Got more than I bargained for - Weetabix, Marmite, Paxo, Gravy granules (real gravy not the lardy white mulch they want to throw on, of all things, BISCUITS! round here), Chocolate Hobnobs, Wine Gums, Ribena - ahhhhhhhhh! A taste of home.

Regards
