totally confused on taxes..green card holder
my husband has a green card, he is from sweden, has been here 3 1/2
years just got his green card 2 summers ago i think it was..something
like that
anyways since we got married and filed for a adjustment of status we
have always filed a 1040 and he has always paid taxes out of his
paychecks weekly and at the end of the year we get most back plus the
eic since were way under the poverty limit
and we usually get a big old happy tax refund with 2 kids and me as his
dependents
now over the years a few friends have said ..why does morgan pay income
taxes..he dosnt have too..
and to be honest i have been terrified to properly look into it cuz in
my mind i am thinking well if he dosnt have to pay taxes there goes that
earned income credit that makes our refund so huge and that we totally
live for each year..i mean its the only money we have to repair a car or
buy a clunker or catch up on bills..
but i have to know we are finally more money were fixing to next year
cross the poverty limit and make too much for the eic..(33,000) next
year probabbly if all goes well..this year were still right under the
limit..
but since the eic may go bye bye for us anyways I had to ask
should he be paying taxes why do ppl keep telling us that?
if he shouldnt of are we in trouble?
if he dosnt pay taxes do we still get the eic?
and if he wasnt suppossed to pay or collect the eic are we gonna have to
pay that back?
i am pretty scared..
i will check back in here soon but if i should forget where i posted
this at feel free to email me at
[email protected]
thank you.

I am not a tax expert, but I believe a permanent resident that earns
income in the US has to pay taxes on it just like any other working
person in the US.
My husband is a permanent resident and we've paid taxes (filing a 1040
jointly) on his income from DAY 1.
You might want to look at this publication on the IRS website:
http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p519.pdf
You will need Adobe Acrobat reader to view and print it.

More than that... You can be here illegally and still have to pay taxes
and register for the draft.

I would like to add something that could help some of you.
There is a rule: if you entered the US in a certain year and
you lived here less then 184 days (half year) you are exempt
for that year, I mean: you do not have to pay taxes and what
you already payed will be returned.
I had that luck, arriving here on July 18, 2000. And the
luck I found that rule on the internet, examining the taxes
in America. Because H&R Block first did not believe me, but
a little research on their part confirmed it.

Hi again,
The link was for IRS publication 519, which is taxes for aliens (both
resident and non-resident). You can call the IRS at 1-800-829-3676
and request it. It contains all you would need to know.
Hope that helps!
