But do you think that it's possible to get an H1b for teaching with an emergency credential? I somehow doubt it - isn't it meant to be for people with exceptional ability and positions that cannot be filled by USCs.

I know there is a teacher shortage in CA, but unless the OP has a specialized teaching skill that is really hard to find here, I think it's going to be tough.

I'm sorry she hasn't been back... Probably a private/parochial school is her best bet.

Can you clarify how this is relevant to the OP - I didn't get the impression that she is a university prof? AFAIK having a PhD and some published papers is more or less a prerequisite to teach uni here.

Don't need to be a professor to teach at uni....you'll just be a lecturer...and it really does depend on the subjects you'd be teaching...

AFAIK lecturer positions have been reduced drastically due to all the cut-backs at CA unis.

Don't want to split hairs - just don't want to raise the OP's hopes

Fair enough...funny really cos there's millions of teaching jobs in maine...mainly cos the pay is about $20K less than in CT, and also teachers can't claim Social benfits...and it's a right pain getting certified over here..

Thanks for filling in the blanks! I was actually thinking of emergency
credentials and got my thoughts crossed.

Not really. H-1B is open for nearly anybody with a college degree. There
are some rules about protecting jobs for US workers, H-1Bs (unlike Green
Cards) don't have to show that the job cannot be filled by a USC. From a
legal standpoint, teaching is rarely a problem with an H-1B. Most of the
issues surrounding that are practical:

- - The school year usually starts about a month or so before the new
quota becomes available.

- - The salary may not be high enough. That could be an issue if some
schools, for instance private schools, pay much better than public
schools and drive up the prevailing wage.

- - I'm not sure how the particularly low salary of a teacher with
emergency credentials would work with an H-1B.

- - The school district may simply not be willing to do the paperwork.
