There were also other ways to lose Canadian citizenship based on long residence outside Canada.

In most (not all) cases, such persons automatically (and retroactively) got back their Canadian citizenship on April 17, 2009.

After the 2009 changes, it's a fairly safe assumption that anyone born in Canada, except to diplomat/official parents, is a Canadian citizen unless they have formally renounced that status.
I'd just like to thank you all for your advice and persisting with some of my stupider questions.

I now need to concentrate on getting my Accounting qualification and then look into this in a few years. My Dad's of the opinion "what have you got to lose?" so we'll see...

As it appears you are a Canadian citizen by descent, make sure you understand the following as it pertains to any children you have, who are born outside Canada:

Remember it takes a long time to get the Citizenship Certificate, but the application form is quite simple and cheap (£45), so you may as well go about applying for it now. At least when you have it that is the slowest process out of the way.
