Prior to February 14, 1977, adult Canadian citizens lost their Canadian citizenship if they acquired another one. Children of a Canadian father (or in some cases, a Canadian mother) could lose their Canadian citizenship at the same time as a parent, if they had a non-Canadian citizenship at the time.

There were also other ways to lose Canadian citizenship based on long residence outside Canada.

In most (not all) cases, such persons automatically (and retroactively) got back their Canadian citizenship on April 17, 2009.

After the 2009 changes, it's a fairly safe assumption that anyone born in Canada, except to diplomat/official parents, is a Canadian citizen unless they have formally renounced that status.

I'd just like to thank you all for your advice and persisting with some of my stupider questions.

I now need to concentrate on getting my Accounting qualification and then look into this in a few years. My Dad's of the opinion "what have you got to lose?" so we'll see...
