Default Student F1 visa

I had an interview at the US embassy in Paris yesterday and this morning have received my visa! Yippeee!!!

Anyway, on my Ds160 form, I put my planned arrival date of the 11 Dec, being one month before my course starts.

I was expecting to see this date on my visa, but I only have a issue date of 16 Nov 2010 and expiry date of 14 Nov 2015.

Do I take it that my visa is valid as of now and I could travel out earlier than planned? Also, I'm surprised that I've been given one for 5 years, as opposed to the two years I requested.

I'm very happy.

I think you're still only allowed to travel one month prior to the start of your course. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

Just phoned the POE, and it is 30 days before the date stated on the I20, so for me, the date is 10th Jan 2011, so I can come out 11th Dec 2010.

It was worth an ask.

Be sure to thoroughly read Page 2 of your I-20. It contains a lot of important information.
