SSN Saga
My wife arrived here on a CR1 Dec 8. The next day we went to our loal SS office to apply for her SS card. We were told that here status could not be verified with INS, so the process should take around 3 weeks.
No SS card received going into mid-January, so we started calling the 800 #. Still awaiting verification from INS.
On Jan 21, my wife received her plastic green card. So she went to the SS office again. Still awaiting INS approval (even when showing them a plastic card!). They said to wait 2 weeks.
Still no word. We went again today. Again, the inspector said no approval from INS, though being presented with the plastic card. The SS agent became suspicous of his records, and notified his supervisor. She went to the back and pulled out a large file labelled "Awaiting INS approval". In that pile was the actual approval from INS for my wife. Apparently it is all a paper process, the local SS office requests the approval from an INS office. The SS office had not gotten around to processing the stack of paper.
If we had not gone in, who knows how much longer SS would have taken.... Well, she should have her SSN by telephone on Tuesday.
