Default SS Card Help

Hey all...My fiancee came here on a K1 about 3 weeks ago. When and what do I
need to get her a SS card/number??

As a side note...Is there a way to do searches for specific info on the
newsgroup? I am sure this question is answered somewhere in the archives.

Thanks,
Jason and Angelica

An individual with K-1 status applying for a work authorized SSN must present
evidence to establish his or her age, identity, current lawful alien status and
employment authorization.

We will not issue an SSN to an individual that is within 14 days of his or her
alien status expiring (Per EM-02091). Until the 76th day after entry an
individual with K-1 status is work authorized based on K-1 status and only needs
to provide an unexpired I-94 showing current K-1 status (Per RM 00203.500 C1
Employment Authorization for Nonimmigrants) as work authorization. Once, an
individual with K-1 status has been in the United States 76 days he or she will
need an employment authorization document, i.e. I-688B or I-766 to establish work
authorization.

You can find a link to EM-02091 at:

http://policy.ssa.gov/public/referen...ttocategory=EM

RM 00203.500 Employment Authorization for Nonimmigrants:

We suggest that individuals with K-1 status apply for corrected SSN cards after
marriage to update the SSN record to reflect the married name.

An alien applying for a work authorized corrected SSN card due to a name change
or correction must present evidence to establish identity, current lawful alien
status and employment authorization. The employment authorization document should
be in the married name.

All applicants for corrected replacement SSN cards need to provide document(s)
that establish his or her new/corrected name and the name currently shown on his
or her SSN record.

At least one of the documents must show either a photograph of the person or
information that can be compared with the SSN record data, e.g., age, date of
birth, or parents' names.

The name to be shown on the SSN card (item 1, line 1 on the application) must
match the name on the identity document showing the new name.

You can find more detailed information regarding changing SSN record (Numident)
data on our Website at:

policy.ssa.gov/poms.nsf/lnx/0100203210

When requesting an SSN card, the documents presented, as evidence must be either
originals or copies certified by the issuing agency. We cannot accept uncertified
or notarized photocopies as evidence.

An individual needs to provide at least two documents as evidence to establish
age, identity, lawful alien status and work authorization.

The birth certificate is the preferred document an individual can provide when
proof of age is requested. However, we can accept a passport to establish age.

The following list includes some of the documents we normally accept as proof of
identity:

-- Driver's license
-- Passport
-- U.S. Government or State employee ID card
-- School ID card, record, or report card
-- Marriage or divorce record
-- Health insurance card
-- Clinic, doctor, or hospital records
-- Military records
-- Court order for name change
-- Adoption records
-- Church membership or confirmation record
-- Life insurance policy
-- Immigration document, i.e. I-551, I-688B or I-766

An individual may use any other document that establishes identity using the
following criteria:

-- The document provides information the reviewer can compare with the data on
the form SS-5 (e.g., the person's name, as well as age, date of birth, or
parents' names) and/or
-- The document provides information the reviewer can compare with the applicant
(e.g., physical description, photograph).

NOTE: A non-picture identity document should have the person's name as well as
information that can be compared to the SSN record, the applicant or other
documents submitted (e.g., age, date of birth, or parents' names).

However, identity evidence must be of recent issuance to establish an
individual's continued existence and have been established at a later time and
for a different purpose than the birth record.

Generally, “recent means a current, unexpired document. The acceptability of an
identity document must be evaluated on a case by case basis by the office
processing the application, taking into consideration the applicant's situation
and exploring what evidence is available for the person.

Kinds of documents that are not identity documents:

-- Library card
-- Vehicle registration
-- Voter's registration
-- Rental or lease agreement or receipt
-- Credit card (with or without a photo)
-- Shopping card (e.g., warehouse store shopping card)
-- Check cashing card
-- Bank deposit slip
-- Telephone/Utility bill
-- Fishing/hunting license
-- Birth certificate

You can find more detailed information regarding evidence that establishes
identity on our Website at:

policy.ssa.gov/poms.nsf/lnx/0100203200

The unexpired I-551, I-94, or employment authorization document establish lawful
alien status.

Employment Authorization Documents:

-- I-688B
-- I-766
-- I-94 (With visa status that allows work in the U.S.)
-- I-551 (Stamp or card)

We cannot accept a receipt or notice of action from as proof of lawful alien
status or work authorization.

You can request Form SS-5 by calling our toll-free number, 1-800-772-1213.

Form SS-5, Application for a Social Security Card, is the appropriate form to
request an original SSN and card or corrected card.

You also can access Form SS-5 on our Website at:

www.ssa.gov/online/ss-5.html

To read and print Form SS-5 at a personal computer, you will need the Adobe
Acrobat Reader. The software is available free of charge from Adobe's Internet
server at:

www.adobe.com/prodindex/a...dstep.html

Complete the Form SS-5 and take it along with the required documents, to the
nearest Social Security office.

You can obtain the address and directions to the nearest Social Security office
from the Social Security Office Locator, which is available on the Internet at:

www.ssa.gov/locator

Normally, an SSN card should be received in the mail within two weeks after the
application and document(s) have been received.

However, when an alien requests an SSN or replacement/corrected SSN card, we will
verify his or her documents and current status with the appropriate Bureau of the
Department of Homeland Security. If verification is not available through the
Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) system, we will send Form
G-845 for manual verification. This may delay assigning of an SSN and issuing of
a card by several weeks or months.

You can contact the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (CIS) National
Customer Service Center by calling, 1-800-375-5283 or visiting your local CIS
office. You can locate CIS offices on their Website at:

www.uscis.gov/graphics/fi.../index.htm

Employers can contact the CIS Business Liaison Office Hotline at their toll-free
number, 1-800-357-2099 with work authorization and Form I-9 questions.

You may also wish to review "Employer Responsibilities When Hiring Foreign
Workers," that can be found on our Website at:

www.ssa.gov/employer/hiring.htm

All cards are mailed from Social Security Headquarters in Baltimore, Maryland to
the postal address provided on the Form SS-5

Our 800-number telephones generally are less busy during the early morning from
7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and in the late afternoon and evening from 5:00 p.m. to
7:00 p.m. We encourage people to call during these times to avoid busy signals
and extended waiting periods. Our busiest times are during the first week of the
month and on Mondays and Tuesdays throughout the month. Some services are
available 24 hours a day through the 800 number automated menu.
