Default Son's green card expired, wants to return to the US

My wife, my sons and I obtained a green card through my
father/grandfather in 1990. We moved down to the US at that time.
After a few years the work ended and we returned to Canada. My son is
now 22 and has finished school and wants to return to the US for
employment.

Is he able to do this and what hoops will he have to jump through?
Any advice is appreciated.

It looks like you've lost your LPR status long time ago through abandonment
by not making the US as your general place of abode. You should have
maintained LPR status by being PERMANENT residents of the US - not Canada.
Now, you have to go through the same starting process again just like
anybody seeking permanent residency status in the US if you still have any
qualifying conditions to immigrate.
