Default So, what's happening here then?

Going on vacation again soon: if anyone's interested I'll post some photographs like I did last year.

Itinerary this year:
  • SEA->SLC (fly)
  • Drive to Moab - two nights there seeing Arches NP
  • Drive to Vernal - day at Dinosaur National Monument
  • Drive to Teton Village - three nights relaxing/spa/swimming, plus days in Grand Teton NP. Our 9th wedding anniversary happens there, so no photographs of THAT bit!
  • Drive to Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone NP - four nights there on a ranger-guided hiking break into the back country to see (we hope) elk, wolves and other critters that avoid the public areas
  • Drive back to SLC
  • SLC->SEA (fly)
We enjoyed Yellowstone so much last year, which is why we're doing it again this year.

Have you ever been to Yosemite? In my opinion, it is a better park for hiking but may be too rugged.

I think you're underestimating the amount you'll want to do here. While you can whizz round the easily accessible sights in Arches in a day you may want to consider doing this over two days. And then there's the spectacular Canyonlands NP right there too, which I personally rated higher than my trip to the Grand Canyon. I'd be tempted to say three nights minimum at Moab so a full day can be spent at each of Arches and Canyonlands NPs.

Canyonlands - not my own pics - and they certainly don't even begin to do it justice:

If you miss the wolves and grizzlies in Yellowstone, there is a wolf and grizzly discovery center in the town of West Yellowstone. Interesting and not too bad, but I wouldn't make a special trip just to see them.

Wow, that looks great! I love Utah. I've been to Bryce and Zion at least 4 times each ... I "MUST" get over to Canyonlands and Arches soon.

I'm living vicariously at the moment through various family members who are flying into Arizona to visit me, and then off to Utah for road trips. They are all enjoying Arizona and Utah more than they used to enjoy California - and that's saying something because I couldn't keep them away from there!

When is the best time of year to visit Arches/Canyonlands? I feel a trip coming on ...
