So confused!

Hey guys

Firsly, thank goodness I have found this forum!

I have been looking for information on Visa's, jobs etc on moving to America for about a month now and my head is just pickled!

Basically, me (19) and my friend (21) are wanting to move away to America to work, potentially live after a year or 2. We have been offered by our mate to stay with him for a while until we get somewhere to stay more permanent.

I am so confused about the whole thing though and have a few questions, which are :
  1. What visa would be most appropriate?
  2. How do you get an application form?
  3. How much is the Visa?
  4. Do you need to get a job before you can apply for a Visa?
  5. What is the easiest way to apply for a job in the US?

Sorry for all the questions but any answers, no matter how big or small would be much appreciated - I am just so confused.

Thanks for any answers in advance - and any questions, just ask

Click on the USA header and choose the 'How to Live and Work in the USA' that will give you your answers.

Hi, thanks for the quick reply

I have had a look at that link - Basically what I picked up from it is if you need to do a job which is in short supply, or you work for a company which has UK and US stores/branches, or you have special talents regarding your occupation?

So, can you not just get a job, get your working Visa and go and work?

If you are asking can you get a job in Safeways stacking shelves and then get yourself a visa. No you can't.

The guide is very clear, if you can't answer yes to any of the questions forget it.

That was worded wrong - what I mean is, is there a company which specializes in getting people a job in the US, and then when I goto apply for my working Visa I can say that I have a job waiting for me? Because at the minute I have no idea how to get a job.

No ...For employment in the US you need a degree .. the employer has to get your visa at vast cost

The regulations define a "specialty occupation" as requiring theoretical and practical application of a body of highly specialized knowledge in a field of human endeavor including but not limited to architecture, engineering, mathematics, physical sciences, social sciences, biotechnology, medicine and health, education, law, accounting, business specialties, theology, and the arts, and requiring the attainment of a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent as a minimum

No, there isn't and don't believe any "agency" that tells you otherwise.
Basically you have to marry a USC or get a company transfer after working for them in a managerial capacity for more than 12 months or get a company to hire you because you have something exceptional to offer.
In the latter 2 examples it's the company that applies for the visa for you.

... so basically there is no chance of me getting into the US without a degree.

Even with a degree, there's very little chance of you getting to the US. UK friend of mine has spent half her life in Florida, has the degree, plenty of work experience in FL...can't get back in. She gave up and went to New Zealand.

The US has an extremely closed immigration system compared to many other western countries. I'm not quite sure where people get ideas to the contrary, but sorry to disappoint you.

Why not go somewhere were you can get a Working Holiday Visa such as Canada or Oz? The US is notoriously tough to get in to unless you have a degree and/or specialist skills, so maybe consider somewhere easier?

Good luck.
