My fiance tried to register for the Selective Service after he got his SSN and it didn't work for some reason (online). I think some form we filled out after that, for AOS or whatever, said the BCIS would go ahead and register him anyway? So he never did it himself.

From what I've seen you need an SSN to register online but can do it by mail
without. (Caveat: I was over 26 at the point I would otherwise have needed
to register so I haven't been through the process myself).

Andy.

My fiance tried to register online at http://www.sss.gov and apparantly his SSN is not in whatever database it needs to be in, for this. He's had it for 2 weeks now. SSN isn't required for registering:

AT THE POST OFFICE
Selective Service "mail-back" registration forms are available at any U.S. Post Office. A man can fill it out, sign (leaving the space for your Social Security Number blank, if you have not yet obtained one*), affix postage, and mail it to Selective Service, without the involvement of the postal clerk. Men living overseas may register at any U.S. Embassy or consular office.

*Provide your Social Security Number to the Selective Service when you do obtain one.
