How much variety is there in the requirements to

Is it true that in some states the applicant

Usually always a theoretical and a practical test.

In most states, nowadays. After 9/11, several states have
introduced this.

There are variations from state to state and most of the 50 states require a social security number. New Jersey is revoking thousands of driver's licenses because people can't prove the social security numbers they used to get the license are real.

More importantly, just about every state will demand you show proof of immigration status from the USCIS before you can get a license along with a number of documents showing your residency in the state.

It depends on what you mean by "variety." Only an examination of the
state motor vehicle websites can provide detailed information (which of
course could be wrong or imcomplete but it's a place to start)
