Renewing GC for a Teen

Interesting trip to a local USCIS office this week for my daughters biometrics.

We didn't realise when she turned 14, 2 yrs ago that she needed a new GC. Had been travelling on the card for the two years without any problems. Finally started the process to renew it a couple of months ago, and got her bio-metrics appointment this week.

We turn up and she fills in the form the security guard give her and checked her current GC. She then gets sent to a second line (not for bio metrics) to see an immigration officer. Apparently all GC renewals are currently taking up to 9 months so they are giving all applicants a 9 month extension on their current cards.

She gets to speak to the immigration guy (I wasn't allowed in the cubicle with her) and he asks her why she is renewing it as it still has 5 yrs validity and she points at me through the glass screen and says "my mum said it needed replacing" He then said thats not the case to her!

He then sent her off to get her biometrics and new photograph taken. The person that did these said to her that her current card has been extended for 9 months and is good to continue using until the new card arrives.

Yet another example of a government official not knowing the details of the very law/ regulation that governs their job.

This webpage says "A permanent resident shall apply for a replacement Permanent Resident Card when the bearer of the card reaches the age of 14 years, unless the existing card will expire prior to the bearer's 16th birthday".

Go back and throw the book at him.

Also, (based on another thread) if applied for within 30 days of 14th birthday, the filing fee is reduced to $85.

Yep, we missed this bit had to shell out the full $450. Wont make the same mistake when the next one turns 14 in Nov 2015. Already have the calender update set!
