Ah I see, it would be a "Family Preference Immigrant Visa"

The name of a reputable firm would also be good

Whats wrong with a consultant? Mine were very efficient and helpful and got me through the process with no hiccups. They are specialist and know exactly what they are talking about. They have a 100% success rate to date...I dont know how many lawyers can say that...

Well I know a lot of there past clients and they have all had 100% success so I would say thats a good basis to go on

My point was you cant just shut down one over the other. Both can be good.

If you are immigrating to the USA, you don't necessarily need an attorney who is physically in London. You can find one in the USA, and do everything by phone, fax, email, chat, etc.

I know you're looking for a personal reference, but you can also try surfing www.ailalawyer.com.

Much more likely to be scammed by a 'consultant'.

If you want legal advice see a Lawyer.

http://www.us-visa.co.uk/

This one is in Brighton, not too far and seems highly thought of.

You can also be scammed by a lawyer which is why it always best to go with a suggestion from someone who has been through it before...

With a lawyer you have the protection of their professional membership - the Bar or whatever. A consultant or whatever doesn't offer that protection.

Avoid anybody that claims a 100% success rate.

I have still met many lawyers who have been shocking in quality and advice. Just because they have a professional membership it doesnt mean they know about the visa you are applying for or indeed the business transaction you are going through etc.

I know a LOT of people that used them and so was satisfied and they have done an amazing job with mine. I dont think people should automatically dismiss consultants because they arent a lawyer...especially if they come highly recommended...

If a lawyer gets too many serious complaints then they can be stripped of their membership and not allowed to practice as a lawyer. A consultant walks away with your money, maybe sets up shop under a new name, and you've got no recourse.

Think yourself lucky then. It's like driving a car without a seatbelt. When it goes well you'll be fine. When it goes wrong... well, you get the picture.
