Thank you BritInParis, ScousePete, Pollyana & Wintersong I think I will see which line is shorter when I get there.

On the way back to US when I check in at Heathrow, I use my US passport to exit the UK correct?

You'll need to show your US passport to the airline staff at check-in, yes (and give your US passport details if you do online check in).

I'm not 100% sure whether or not you *have* to show your US passport when you go through security, though. I always have, simply because it's the one I checked in with, but I assume that you could use your UK passport at that point if you wanted to. Not that there'd be any benefit to doing so, though!

Nope. The system is a joke. I have two EU passports, and I routinely book my flight with one, and enter the UK with my other. Never fails. Laughable really.
