Question on contacting USCIS

I'm in Australia, and previously lived in the US. I had gone through some of
the immigration process after overstaying, when my immigration attorney kept
the money and closed up shop. At the time I had a family emergency and had
to come back to Australia (over 2 years ago), now I'd like to find out where
I stand as in can I return when I need to "with USC husband and USC/AU
child" for my Father-in-law when he passes?
Looking on the website, I can't find a way to contact them. I don't know the
file number which the attorney had from USCIS, they kept the papers along
with the money paid.
How do I obtain info?
Thanks for your time...
PS. I contacted the US embassy, and they didn't understand the situation or
know how to find out and say I'm not in the system.
Thanks for your time.

USCIS are unlikely to help, I'm afraid. You may well be barred from entry if you were out of status for more than 180 days and failed to regularize your status before leaving. But you give insufficient information to make a determination.

1. How long did you overstay?
2. How much of the immigration process did you complete before?

I guess with the info I provided I have confused people and didn't get an
answer to my question.
I need to contact USCIS according to the US Embassy, yet they did not tell
me how to go about this.
Can anyone point me to a email address to contact the USCIS, without having
to put in file numbers and such as I do not have access to them.

There is an 800 number on there, but I can guarantee you'll get a different answer each time you call. The people who answer the phone are contract workers and know very little about immigration law.
Your best bet if you want a true, correct answer, is to consult with an immigration attorney.
