If & when we are approved I will be heading down south with my small car and just
some small stuff that I can fit in the Car. I do plan on filing for an advanced
parole as well because of Family reasons, but would also saying that i need to pick
up the rest of my belongs be considered a good excuse as well. Also if I did not file
for the AP how long would it be before I was to be allowed to re-entry Canada with no
problems getting back in to the US

AFAIK, if you leave the US without an AP, the INS will consider your application
"abandoned". You would have to start over again, if they let you in at all....

You don't need an ~excuse~ to file for A/P. Just put down for family visits, vacation, emergencies.
The only other way to leave the US without abandoning your pending AOS is after your AOS interview and you have the I-551 stamp in your passport and/or green card in your possession.
The length of time would depend on the INS office you are using.
