Default Passort question

I am currently in Australia.I hold dual Australian/British nationality. My British passport has expired, but my Australian one is valid. Can i enter UK on my Australian Passport? The reason i do not wish to renew my British passport in Australia is due to the extreme cost - AU$263 for a 10 year renewal in oz,but only UK 77 pounds (approx AU$126) if i renew it once in UK. The length of my stay in UK is undecided, but may only be a short term.thanks

I recently asked this question of the Consulate in NZ about my daughters, they currently have Au passports. They said they needed to enter the UK on UK passports, if they entered on Aus ones they would be considered Aus citizens and would only be able to legally stay as long as if they were tourists. We just got passports for the whole family, mine was about to run out too, not far short of a thousand dollars if you include all the photos. Ouch!

It is possible to enter on your Australian one and immediately renew the UK one, then go to France for the day and re-enter on your British one. Then it won't matter.

However there may be problems on admission to the UK (unless you have other proof of your British passport), airline might not like you travelling on a one way ticket, and you will have problems with work, healthcare, etc, until you have a new British passport.

The "going to France" thing is a myth ... if you are a British citizen, any tourist stamp is null and void.
