Default Our Chicago EAD Experience

Today my wife and I went to the Chicago BCIS office to get her an EAD.
120 days had passed since our receipt date (we have had a busy month
and could have gone after the 90 day mark).

We arrived at 6:25 in the morning and had to wait in line outside the
main entrance. At that point, there was about 40 people waiting ahead
of us.

At a few minutes past 7:00, we proceeded to go inside the main
entrance where they shared some general instructions and had people
take metal stuff out their pockets so it couold be passed through the
security scanners.

After passing through the scanner, we proceeded up an escalator to the
second floor where we had to wait until about 7:30. At that point,
people spoke to an immigration officer who gave them a form and
directed them to either side of the room depending on why they were
there. EAD applications proceeded to the left.

Once inside, you have to fill out the form which just contains mostly
information about who you are and why you are here.

Then you put the form in one of three buckets: EAD with appointment,
walk-in EAD or deferred processing.

Then they call your name and you have to explain to an officer your
situation. The officer seemed shocked that my wife already had a
state issued ID and a social security card. She didn't know that if
you are here on a K1, you can get an SSN. In Illinois, if you have a
SSN, you can get a state ID` card. I wanted her to have this ID so
that she didn't always have to carry her passport around all the time.

After hearing our situation, the officer said she could issue an EAD
today and that we had to wait. After a while passed, we discovered
that the officer who had helped us, left the building or the office or
something. We reexplained our situation and this new officer said she
would help us.

She said she needed to do a background check on my wife and we whould
be all set in about 5 minutes. She put a stamp that covered both the
green receipt letter and the yellow cash receipt.

About 35 minutes later, my wife was fingerprinted and photographed and
then after a few more minutes she was given her EAD. We had thought
that it would be valid for 3 months as an interim EAD but it turned
out to be valid for a year retroactive from 3 months ago meaning there
is 9 more months left.

We left a little more than three hours after we arrived.

In a funny twist, my wife had arranged an interview for 10:00 that
morning assuming the EAD would come through. So as it turns out, she
had a job interview in about 15 minutes after she received her EAD.
Not sure if she will get it or not.

Anyway, thats what we went thorugh today. Hope it sheds some light
for other people who need to go through this. By the way, we parked
in a pay lot at the intersection of W. Jackson and Federal street. It
costs $14.40 for hours which is cheap by Chicago standards.

Best of luck to all of you.

I did the e-filing of the I-765 to renew one of my K-1'er AOS clients who is processing through Chicago. The e-filing date was 06/10/03, and her new EAD arrived in her mailbox this morning.

I believe she went in to an ASC in Chicago, but I'd have to pull the file to make sure. It's late and I'm tired, so I'm not going to go double check now.

I'm going home to sleep (I walk to work, so I have a quick mile still to go).

We filed her 765 in conjunction with the 485 before e-filing was
available.

As part pf the 485, a few months ago, we went to the Waukegan ASC to
get gingerprints. At the place in Chicago yesterday, they just took
one print for the card itself.

yeah I am e-filing, too tired to go downtown, I am kinda sick of that
place... a while back I had some run with them with my EAD, kinda
ridiculous I have to go with a third EAD while my interview has not
come up yet... I was told 22 months, so hopefully I should have answer
within 2-3 months

Would you say that e-filing is a reliable, and efficient method of renewing a EAD permit, Matthew? We're thinking of trying it next month.
I'm being processed via NYC, so god knows if it'll be issued on time...

Personally, I am doing it, mainly because you get a receipt...
and I e-file for IRS and it is a breeze...

but we're talking about BCIS
