I am changing employer under the AC21 provision. Since I received the
Green Card, should I file for a new social security card (which does
not say 'valid for work only with INS authorization) before taking up
the new employment?

I hve no clue, but wouldnt your green card be the authorization? I mean you
show your soc sec card, and your green card as the authorization!

If you obtained permanent resident status, how would you change employers
under AC21? Portability under AC21 for permanent resident cases refers only
to switching employers while a person has Form I-485 pending. After it has
been approved, the person can switch employers, but does not have the
protections of AC21.

My understanding is that once you get your GC you don't have to get a new SSN card without the writing - but it's nice to
I didn't have to fill in a form, just explained the situation (I had a previous error regarding my name which BCIS had since rectified), they checked in the SAVE system to verify my new status. I showed them my GC, not sure if this was necessary as they didn't request it. The new card came within a week.

Since you have a green card, you are automatic qualify to work for any
company in US. You only need to show them your green card when you apply,
not the SS card. You can apply for a new SS card if you want to

You don't have to, but it's always a good idea. Besides, I'm sure
you'll feel great once you get rid of that nasty writing on it!
Also, you can leave your GC at home, and just present a drivers
licence and your new SS card to an employer, and that's all the proof
you need.

if you have a green card, you are automatic qualify to work in US. When you
take a new employment and fill out form I-9 for them( employment
eligibility) you only need to show them your green card. That is all you
need to show them by Law, do not show them your SS card, just tell them your
SS number. I still recommend you go down to SS office and ask them to remove
the line ( valid to work only with INS authorization). SS office will issue
your a SS card with the same SS number that you already have in couple
weeks. But you are not required to do so before take new employment.

If I have an old SSN and changed status to GC, will the number be
different?
If I am married and change my surename, will I get a new card with a
different number and name on it?

Your SSN should stay the same. If when you go to the SSA the information in the SAVE system has been updated to show your new surname that should be updated on the new card too - couldn't hurt to mention this to them too, just not sure if they can issue a card with it until the info is updated on the system.
