Well, that may also depends on where you get married. in some countries the vows and responsibilities to each other in marriage are in the civil code.

The part I found analogous is that in the wedding vow you say Sickness and Health....Rich or Poor... you can't just pick Health and Rich... Same as becoming a citizen means both receiving a passport, receiving US protection while abroad AND bearing arms if so required by law. Some are privileges that you are happy to receive and some are responsibilities you bear as part of your commitment.

You can pick and choose your wedding vows.

Warning: "till death do you part" should not be considered a goal.

Sorry to drag it on as it's not that important, but my understanding is that you certainly can pick and choose your wedding vows in the UK and US.

Sorry, I'm originally from a more totalitarian country where this is not the case.

Imagine you cannot change them for the purposes of my argument

I tried, honour and obey, no go.

Another adage, sticks and stones can break my bones but words can never hurt me.

I agree. That is why I used "European Theater of Operations" in the military command structure sense. The Russians didn't work for Ike.

Military History is my main interest and I do not remember coming across such an incident. Just wondering where?

I would have guessed N Africa, but not in Europe.

Was given a knackered old UAZ to drive the six or so miles from one side to the other of a former Warsaw Pact airfield in the early nineties. On returning from the first trip, I bitched that the bloody thing didn't have synchromesh and I had to double declutch all my down changes.

"Don't blame us! Is Yankee design!" was the reply.

Seems the Americans gave them the basic design during WW2. As it worked, there wasn't much reason to change it.
