N400 - the interview, the oath and status

Hi folks,

I received my interview letter this week for my citizenship interview/tests.

With my usual luck, the interview is eight days before the family and I go up to Canada for a week (anticipating a much longer wait, we arranged to go up over the July 4th week ages ago).

My question is this: assuming that the interview goes well, what is my status post-interview/pre-oath?

Am I correct thinking that I'm not an *actual* citizen until I've taken the pledge?

I am pretty sure that the USCIS office I'm going to (Lawrence, MA for those who know this lovely city) doesn't hold oath ceremonies on the same day.

Will my green card be taken at the interview?

I'm very aware of the rules requiring US Citizens to enter the country on a US passport and there's very little chance of getting one in the time between an oath ceremony, say the same week, and us leaving...

Thanks in advance!

You assume correctly. You are not a US Citizen until you take the oath.

At the time of the ceremony you will have to relinquish your green card and you are given a certificate of citizenship. It is not taken from you at the conclusion of naturalization interview as you are not yet a US citizen. Your status is still permanent resident.

There might be a table at the ceremony where you can apply for your US Passport so that you can travel. Or you can go to the nearest passport office or US postal office to apply.

Remember you can always ask for a different date for the oath if it is inconvenient for you. Sometimes they like to make a big occasion of the ceremony on a holiday such as the 4th of July.

You are going to be in Canada for Canada Day. I understand it is a big one this year.

Fabulous! That was what I was hoping for.

As long as I have my green card I feel like I have a fighting chance of getting back into the country.

Hopefully I'll be able to schedule an oath ceremony for after our trip.
