As promised ...
8/21/2002 -- Forwarded N-400 to Vermont (VSC)
8/22/2002 -- Received notice to appear at the Wheaton INS ASC
(Application Support Center) on 10/24/2002
8/23/2002 -- Fingerprints done. Less than 10 minutes -- no lines, no
waiting. Very friendly and courteous staff.
INS officer on dury also told my wife that she can take the
civics/history and English exam RIGHT NOW. Both of us were very
surprised. My wife did begin to study for the exam several weeks ago
and felt very comfortable.
After the exam, my wife cheerfully exited and declared, "100% for
civict/history, 100% for English!". INS officer also gave her a
certificate stating that she passed all necessary exams. No exam will
be necessary when my wife visit Baltimore INS for the final interview
(hopefully, within the next 2 months).
Amazing!

Was that the first you sent your N-400 in......August......cause if so
Vermont is the service center to deal with. We sent in Steve's N-400 to NSC
August 31 and only have a NOA to show for it!

My wife and I had to visit Baltimore INS on August 11th and attend I-751
interview. For one reason or another, our case was selected for an
interview. The interview turned out to be very quick. The INS officer
spent a few minutes looking at our Hawaiian wedding photos. He was also from
Hawaii and asked us a few questions about the islands. We could have told him
a novel or two ... ;-)
My wife's green card arrived 3 weeks later -- again, hard to believe.
The INS officer told us that "right now, Vermont processes naturalization
application very quickly, so I suggest to apply when you are eligible". On
August 18th (3 days after being eligible, 2 years and 9 months), we sent my
wife's N-400 petition to Vermont.
The first NOA did not indicate that the exam could be taken at the same with
fingerprints.
Will keep everyone updated
Good luck to all!

Wow, what an amazing time frame. I'm in Maryland too, except working
everything through the Baltimore office.
I sent my N-400 to Vermont in mid April 2002
Was fingerprinted (at Baltimore) in early August
and just received my interview date for early December.
Maybe as you're dealing with a support center and not the Baltimore field
office they gave you the test early. I wish I could have had mine
already.... but it's just as well as I haven't studied yet :-)
Gotta hit them books.
Interview is in a few weeks time.
