Multiple Visa Applications?

I'm probably going to post a lot of questions, because my man and I are just starting in this whole process.
I live in Kansas, and John lives in the UK. We're already working on getting the paperwork together for his fiance visa, but he's also got a shot at a job here locally. Is it possible to apply for 2 visas at once, or can you only apply for one? And how long have people generally had to wait for either type of visa application? We've seen timelines all over the map!
I'll have more questions I'll be posting, I just don't have them on me now. Be patient with probably seeing my name a lot!
And thank you for any help youcan provide!

By the way, for anything related to fiance or spousal visas, I'd strongly recommend looking at the newsgroup alt.visa.us.marriage-based, or (if you're reading this at BritishExpats) the US Marriage-based Visas forum. (They're essentially the same thing.) You have the right crowd here for the work visa stuff, but the experts on all the K and I-130 stuff hang out there.
Good luck!

If John has a degree, and his job requires one, and either you or the employer is willing to put in a few thousand dollars to 'grease the wheels', he can get an H-1B visa in a matter of a few weeks. This allows him to enter the country and work for that employer for up to six years. At some point during that six-year period, the two of you can get married, and then he can just file the I-130/I-485/etc. package that lets him get a Green Card without leaving the US or being separated from you. In other words, if he's been offered a professional job and his employer is willing to go through a small amount of pain (and a moderate amount of money) to bring him in, that is his quickest route to a life with you. If the job isn't of a professional nature, chances are you'll be better off waiting out the I-129F stuff.
