Question Luggage and things with Airlines...

This may sound like a dumb question, but I'd like some clarification, as this is what I've heard:

that airlines* allow passengers to have double the allowed luggage if they are immigrating. Is this true?

* I presume if this is true, it must be certain airlines. Does anyone have any experience with such airlines?

Many thanks!

RockBank is an unknown quantity at this point

We're going with Virgin to the USA and we have 2 x 32kg allowances each.

Very useful as we intend to take the car seats for the two children

That is the normal baggage allowance allowed for Virgin whether you are emigrating or not, BA baggage allowance is the same

This is not airline specific but rather US specific. There is legislation for the US that specifies that planes coming to the US have a minimum baggage allowance of 2x32kg's. (NB only 2 peices) Most of the rest of the world it is resonably unlimited in number of peices but only 20kg's.

Yes, American, United, SAS and BMI (to name the airlines I've flown
trans-Atlantic with) all have the same baggage allowance too. (Plus one
carryon item)
I don't think the baggage allowance changes for immigrants.

Incidentally, when I bring my daughter's car seat on the plane, it is not
counted toward the baggage alowance or carryon, since she's sitting in it
and it's not checked.

If you need more baggage than the allowance, they'll generally let you check
it as long as you pay for excess baggage. but it would probably be cheaper
to ship it.

The airlines pretty much all go by the same rules. If you are travelling internationally, the maximum weight is 70lbs for each bag. You are allowed to check 2 bags free of charge up to the 70lb allowance. Carry on rules are 2 small items, ie.. ladies purse and a rollerboard type bag.

My suggestion is to check with a freight forwarding company as they are MUCH cheaper if you are shipping alot of items or heavier items.
