The letter before the numbers corresponds to the service center/local office where the application is going to be process.
My EAD application starts with MSCXXXXXXX MSC=Missouri Service Center.

These initials, by the way, relate back to the old names of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Service Centers, with EAC being Vermont Service Center, LIN being Nebraska Service Center, SRC being Texas Service Center, and WAC being California Service Center.

The Vermont Service Center (VSC), formerly known as the Eastern Service Center (EAC), is one of four adjudication processing centers in the United States.

EAC means that your application is being processed at Vermont Service Center.
Take care!

The first three characters are letters and represent the service center where processing takes place. The next two characters are numbers and represent the year. The next three numbers represent the day of the year.
It gets a bit tricky here. Oct 1'st is the first day of the fiscal year at CIS. So you count the days forward from Oct. 1'st. The last five digits represent the order received on that day...I think.
