Default Leave U.S. temperorily after receiving GC?

Once I get the so called GC stamp on my passport, can I immediately quit job
and leave country for 6-12 months. Does getting the stamp on passport make
you mobile or is it the arrival of the actual GC. Again, I do understand the
drawbacks of leaving country for 6-months to a year with a GC but that would
be the case even after having the GC for 3 years.

Thanks.

The stamp is as valid as the actual GC, so yes, you can travel if you have
only the stamp.

If you got the GC through employment, you are supposed to work for the
sponsoring employer.

The stamp has the same legal value as the actual card.

Just a simple thing to remember:

Along with the I-551 stamp there is a
validity date that allows travelling
without the physical card. If the validity
date expires before he GC arrives, the
permanent residence status is
not a problem as long as one is inside US.
For any travel plans without the physical GC it's a very good idea to get an
extension of the validity date from USCIS
local office, if there is any possibiity
that the planned travel dates would go beyond the stamped valid date of
travel.
