layoff after green card

I know that we are supposed to work for a while for the same company after we receive
the employment based green card. However, as you know, economy is not that good in
these days and there are many layoffs. I am concerned quite a bit and have the
following questions.
Would INS create any problem in case of a layoff? Would it be better to ask employer
to provide a letter for the reasons of a layoff (of course, employer may not be
willing to do so for legal reasons)?
We agreed to work on certain skills and work categories. If the person is asked to
either leave the company or switch to another position that is irrelevant to what he
has been doing, would this be enough reason to quit the job? If a related position is
not found outside the company, would be OK to look for another career? Can higher
education be an alternative?
Thanks for your replies.
