Default L2 and SSN

L2 visa holder can apply for social security number after EAD? Not before?

And on the flip side, my wife was told (multiple times) that she couldn't have a Social without her EAD.

well, this is why I'm asking. I got my ssn within a week on an L2 but the website just reads like you can't get a ssn unless you have a visa to work, so they could make you wait until you get the ead through.

hmvsdog, how long ago was this?

Last year. She first tried in February and got told “no”. We asked again in March/April and was told “no” again. Her EAD came through in May and she got it then.

The local social security office.

PS: Excellent (and correct) use of the word “whom”. I miss that from England.

As an L2 I never applied for an EAD as I'm busy enough with 3 kids. Got my SSN no problem.

I think from looking at your posts that this was 2012 though?

I also got my ssn pretty much immediately but I think now it's after the EAD because they will only issue them to people who can work.

Yes mine was 2012. If the rules have changed glad I didn't need the EAD in the beginning. When I did get one as part of the greencard process it was a combined AP/EAD. It took 2 months the first time and then when it expired the new one took 6 months. Now have one without the authorisation wording.
Frustrating to pay for EAD just because you want the SSN.

I have my SSN. I don't have my EAD yet. This is all recent as we have only been here 2 months.

Got my SSN within a day or so of landing. Didn’t apply for an EAD but received one in the mail a couple of months later.
