Default Kentucky Drivers License

I saw some stuff about Kentucky in this group (it's a beautiful place
and the people aren't ALL rednecks), and wondered if anyone had had
recent experience of getting a drivers license there?

I understand I can use my UK license for a month (though I guess that
will work for hire cars only), and that I need to take at least part
of the driving test to get a KY license. Anyone know if I need to do
the written or driving test? I'll be calling them this week, but it's
always good to see other people's experiences.

I guess I need my SSN to get a license? This should be fun. And I
thought applying for the visa was the worst part...?!

Thanks in advance

Hey Jim, where are you from?

I'm in Louisville, from Western Canada (the people ARE great here!) I am curious about the testing involved for a Kentucky license too.

Sorry for the delay but geez I've been mjoving countries and all
sorts.

I was told that I can use my UK license for up to a year, and that I
would need to take both the written and driving test to get a license.

I also think that you don't need a social security number any more to
have a license. It seems that has been changed recently (but I
haven't confirmed that myself).

This appears to be correct

Whether or not an SSN is required depends on the state. In North
Carolina one cannot obtain a driver license without an SSN anymore (or
proof that it is not possible to get an SSN I assume)

The Kentucky website's menus are poor. I cannot find the documentation
requirements there

From what I recall, they stopped using your SS# as your DL# in KY several
years ago -
seems too many businesses were wanting DL# to be written on checks, and
people weren't fond of having their SS# floating around on all those checks.
I'm from Louisville, too, btw.

The question is whether an SSN is required in order to obtain a license,
not whether the SSN is the license number itself.

I think I posted a link to the same page yesterday. It does not say
whether an SSN is required to obtain a license. Maybe that means one is
not required but their web pages could be better written

I have not long got my KY drivers licence and to me went through a
whole heap of crap to get it. It went something like as follows.
I first went to apply just after I got married but before I had
applied for AOS, I was rejected the reason being was that I needed to
apply and have proof of applying for AOS first the receipt didn't seem
to be enough I needed my temporary EAD work permit with photo ID. OK I
got all this had my visa, proof of residence (a letter addressed to me
personally)passport and marriage licence (as proof of name change from
visa and passport) then headed to the regional DMV (the local one
didn't have the power to process such applications apparently)to get
permission to sit for a permit. When I received permission (about 1
week)down I head to the local DMV to sit for a written test to gain a
learners permit, YES I had to hold a permit for 30 days despite the
fact that my Aussie and International Licence (good for 1 year) were
still perfectly OK ( I asked and the police said yes and also agreed
it was a stupid rule)and usable so in effect I drove the whole 30 days
unaccompanied then took a full driving test. A very nerve racking
experience for this 45 YO but easy when it was all said and done.
I then went back to the DMV to get my licence and when filling out the
paperwork you have to tick if you are a Citizen or Permanent resident,
well I was neither and when I queried this they had to call Frankfort
as they had NO idea what to do well guess what Frankfort didn't know
either said I had to take all my paperwork and go back to the DMV
office I applied at (a 45 minute drive as the local one doesn't issue
the initial permission to sit for the permit), very frustrated by this
time I said can you please call that office, which they did. This
regionional office then gave them permission to issue my licence.
One other thing the reason they gave me for having to hold a permit
for 30 days was that Australia is not a member of the Geneva
convention and therefore does not entitle me to an automatic licence,
what this has got to do with it I have no idea.
In all it was a pretty long and drawn out experience and I am still
not sure if they really knew what they were doing or saying.

Hope this helps more than it confuses you.
