Default The joys of divorce when applying for Citizenship

As you may have read from previous posts, My wife (USC) and i (GC Holder) divorced after 6 years of marriage.
I would very much like to apply for citizenship but have only been here for 3 1/2 years. I always thought i had to wait for 5 years before applying, but today i found out you can do this after living here, married for 3 years! Fother Mucker!

So here is my question, as we got divorced just last month, you think the USCIS would be really nice to me and grant me my citizenship with only 3 1/2 years here and a recent divorce?

If not, once i have been here for 5 years and apply for Naturalization, how long does it usually take to win the award and become permanent?

If you want to base your naturalization on 3 years of marriage to a USC, you still have to be in that ongoing marriage. Since you are divorced, you need to wait 5 years from the date you became a PR.

Currently it's taking around 6 months from start to finish for naturalization. Not sure how the timeline will look in another few years.

Think of it this way...in just over a year (because you can file 90 days before the 5 yr mark) you can start the process.

Bzzzt... wrong answer! That's only true if you are still married and living together in a viable relationship. If you're divorced, you must wait 5 years.

I have read the requirements in a few places and it seems confusing.... if applying at the five year mark, whether you can file 90 days in advance. I certainly hope so.

Yes, you can. But you must be past the 5 year date at the time of your interview (or maybe it's the oath ceremony... well, one or the other!)

Other than ticking a different box on the form is there actually any technical difference in the process of naturalization 3yr marriage v. 5yr residency? Other than proving you are still married at 3 yrs?
