job offer from the US
My wife just received a job offer from the US that she considers accepting. What are the next steps - I understand that the employer will take care of the paperwork but do we have any options, ie. shall we try for a green card (if it's possible) or for a work visa. What are the timelines. The job in in Virginia.

If your employer wanted to offer sponsoring your wife for greencard,
the employer would have mentioned about it. In another word, you do
not have an option for greencard. I say, take the job, come to US, and
after started working, askt he mployer whether they would be
interested in doing GC.

nope, the job is not in IT. Also, what they said was more like "would you like to immigrate to the US and work for us" so it doesn't rule out the green card, does it? We'll see...

I would still get the visa for now, then have them petition for permanent
residence once your wife is working for them. Otherwise you'd be waiting a
couple of years before being able to get to the US.
However, I think this would depend on what type of visa she's looking at
getting. If it's an H1-B, for example, that would be the way to go.
Of course, you won't be able to work until you get employment authorisation,
which would be part of the green card process.

Then tell them, that you would like to start the immigartion process
via adjustment of status after you start working for them. So then,
your wife should apply for H-1 visa (your employer should guide you on
this) and come to US. Note that H-1 visa can have immigration intent
which you do not need to tell anynone anyway.

Re: job offer from the US
Just be careful about how much you commit yourself too without fully
understanding the immigration process.
I would certainly advise you get some independent professional advice before
you burn any bridges.
If the job is through an agency, don't quit your present job just yet.
Forgive me for making assumptions, but please don't think, like many do,
that being British will help you in any way, I promise you it wont.
Been there, done that.
