Hello,
I am a Canadian/Pakistani citizen and have completed my med school from pakistan. I am applying for residency in the US now. I am currently working on a TN visa as a researcher in the US. Can I apply for a J1 for residency from Canada? Does anyone know what the requirements are?
Thanks.

Yes, you can do a medical residency in the U.S. authorized by J-1 status.
There is only one J-1 issuing organization for medical residencies: ECFMG.
See http://www.ecfmg.org/.
An ECFMG J-1 will obligate you to the two-year home country physical
presence requirement. That is, after finishing the J-1 program, you will
have to spend two years in your home country before you can obtain H-1B
status, L-1 status, or permanent resident status in the U.S.
Therefore, you may wish to consider doing a medical residency authorized by
H-1B status. This requires that you pass parts I, II, and III of USMLE
before the institution files the H-1B petition. It's more trouble, but you
will have more freedom to plan your future.
