Hi Folks,
I was on a fulbright research grant last year (J1 pursuing a non
degree reseach). This year I enrolled into the M.S. program at the
university under J1 visa (The university was my sponsor). I was
granted tution waiver. An american friend of mine gave a letter of
support for meeting living expenses. I want to work if possible to
avoid using the his resources.
Is there anyway I can work off-campus ?
Thanks,
S.
P.S. Last year while under fulbright, I received my SSN. The card said
valid for work only with INS authorization.

In some J-1 programs, you can, in others, you can't. You need to talk to
your program sponsor to find out what their policy is.

If you can indeed work, then this SSN is helpful because you won't have to
wait for your number. Other than that, it does not make a difference.
