J-1 more than once????
Hi all!
Is it possible to get a J-1 Visa more than once?
Eg.: 2000 - 18 months
2006 - another 18 months?
:)

Hello,
a friend of mine was here with a J-1 visa. As far as I know you can
renew that visa. She was from Germany and had stayed for 1 year here in
the states and after the year she would have been able to stay another
year. If you are an aupair, like my friend was, then you should talk to
your hostfamily about it and contact your american embassy in your
homecountry and ask for information there.

You do not give enough information for a yes or no answer.
With the information you have given I would say after 6 years the answer
is maybe.

If you had only done 12 months (like me) previously then you are eligible to apply for another 6 months. If you did 18 months previously you may not come back on the same visa.
However make sure you go through a suitable J-1 sponsor because they are not all eligible to sponsor you a second time. You will have to file a form with them to the department of state explaining how your second J-1 training is different fromt the first.
www.ciee.org are a sponsor that can take you on a second time.
Your first step is to check your IAP 66/DS 2019 and chk what classification you were of J-1 (trainee ? teacher? au-pair? - they all have different time allowances) and then chk how many months you filed for on the start date - end date of your document. If you have any doubts then check with an immigration lawyer, your situation is probably different from mine.
Hope this helps and good luck.

Re: J-1 more than once????
Thanks a lot Bristol. I tried to renew the J-1, but no success. It
would be the same thing: trainee in a hotel. Anyway, I'm trying another
type of Visa. Job is already there. Just need the Visa.

Ana
