After almost 6 months of sitting around elder son (at uni in UK) finally decided that he needed to get his $h!t together if he was going to have his immigrant visa for this summer, and/or before his 21st birthday in November. He applied for his ACRO so we paid his immigrant visa fee via NVC. The immigration attorney prepared the I-864 and once the ACRO was received all the required paperwork was sent off to NVC. So now back into the black hole of waiting. Also elder son has booked his medical for later this month.

Timeline edited to only deal with actions relevant to immigrant visa, not all the other stuff.

Timeline:

Hi lizzyq, I had to file a I-824 (Nov 2nd 2017) as my lawyer messed up my petition, which service centre processed your I-824?

Nesbraska service centre, all our initial receipts had the LIN prefix. Hope yours gets sorted out soon, waiting for your file to reach the top of the pile on somebody's desk really sucks.....

Medical done and dusted no problems. Son reports that he paid £10 for his medical records from the GP.

In his own words: "I have my medical summary. Includes my vax record. Lot of paper. It's got every trip to A&E. Every doctor's appointment. All the correspondence between doctors regarding me. It's pretty thorough. Also looking at it, I really haven't needed to go to the doctors' often"

So in due course that will go into the family medical file for him to refer to over here if necessary.

Well I think he has all his paperwork in order after a last minute trip to an internet cafe in London to print out his appointment letter and courier confirmation By the time I wake up tomorrow his interview should be done and dusted.

Interview done and dusted. With no information to the opposite I believe his visa has been approved as his passport has been retained. This was our text message conversation this morning
Son: Done, in and out in 45 minutes
Me: Approved I take it?
Son: I assume so, they took my passport
This child never has used multiple words when one will do
Now to await return of passport, BWE and card production fee invoice, before booking his flight to come home.

Almost the last update for this thread. Our son had his visa and big white envelope delivered into his grandmother's hands on 4th July. There were no issues having it delivered there in his absence. He duly flew out to the USA via Dublin on 12th July and was processed at USA pre-clearance in Dublin with a brief visit to secondary to get his visa endorsed and hand over the BWE.

Total time elapsed from original submission to receipt of visa = 19 months
Time from approval of principal I-485 to I-824 approval = 5 weeks
Time from I-824 approval to NVC issuing invoice = 3 weeks
There was a big gap between issue of invoice and payment of invoice......
Time from submission of NVC package to case complete = 3 weeks
Time from case complete to interview = 10 weeks
Time from interview to receipt of visa = 1 week

Now he is waiting for SSN & plastic green card to arrive.

Issued!

Default Re: I-140 approved, timescale for rest of process including follow-to-join ?

SSN card arrived in the post yesterday afternoon so now he can open his bank account (their internal documentation specifies SSN & W-9(?) for LPR - and yes that was the branch manager and I saw her written documentation requirements) and head off to the DMV to renew his learner's permit (originally received while on O-3 visa). Of course yesterday morning we had visited the local SSA office where they were at least able to confirm that his number had been issued on 16th of July and we should receive it within the next week or so.
