In summary, indefinitely (so long as your "home" licence remains valid) if it was issued in a country in the European Onion. Otherwise, not more than twelve months. The link that Baloo gives does have all the minute details, they're worth reading if you still aren't sure, though the critical factor is where your licence was issued, not your nationality. E.g. if an American had a (properly obtained) German licence then he could use that indefinitely in the UK.

You should note that, contrary to a lot of misleading advice often given to drivers in the US, you cannot drive indefinitely on an "international" licence once you have moved to the UK. Yes, the licence is valid indefinitely, but it is British law that is relevant and that says "twelve months only".

You're quite right, I should have made that clearer....

Yes, in fact the way it works is that it's 12 months from residence in the UK - not 12 months from last entry (which is how a lot of people seem to try & use it). I know of a few people who have been caught out by this & had their licences removed, fined, and not been allowed to drive again until licence has been exchanged for UK one (if applicable) or passed a test for a UK licence.
