i was wondering how long i can take to get the i-551 stamp
after my aos application is approved? since i'm on ap/ead
i've been lax about getting my pictures taken and going to
the local ins office to get the stamp (and presumably start
the application process for the plastic card). it has now
been 40 days since i was approved and i'd like to wait another
month or so if possible.

Well, the problem is that right now, you have neither evidence of legal
status, nor evidence that you are authorized to work (using your old EAD
actually is a violation of the law because that ceased to be valid when
your I-485 was approved).
More importantly, the plastic GC won't even get ordered until you get your
passport stamped. When you go to stamp the passport, they take your
thumbprint, and you also need to bring your picture. These two items will
end up on your plastic GC.

thanks ingo, but even if i don't have evidence, my status is legal and
i am authorised to work right?

Yes. This would only be an issue if you were stopped by one of the border
patrol checkpoints, or for some other reason were challenged by BCIS or
BCBP.

Hi Ingo, does the above mentioned also apply to an I-485 that's been approved by the IJ (upon termination of removal proceedings)?
Thanks

My passport was stamped on the day my I-485 was approved as I attended the INS office for an interview. They didn't ask for a photograph or fingerprint as presumably they already had these on file ( the photo on my GC is the same one as was previously on my EAD). I gather the process is slightly different at this stage for an employment based GC ?

Yes, the employment-based process is different. For employment-based
I-485s, the processing is done at a remote INS Service Center. In most of
these cases, there is no interview, and the approval notice is mailed to the
applicant. The applicant then has to appear at the local INS district
office in order to get the passport stamp and give INS the photos and
signature.
